Vashon Sportsmen’s Club Steel Plate Challenge
Hi All,
According to the members who organized our first Steel Plate Challenge event on June 8th, 2024, it was great success. At the end of the challenge, the shooters and spectators who participated were asked if they would like to do it again, and a resounding “<EXPLICATIVE> YES!!!” was the response.
So, get your handguns ready for future Steel Plate Challenges. Now that the organizers have had a chance to run an iteration and iron out the wrinkles, at future iterations of the challenge we will be allowing member shooters to bring one shooting guest to the challenge. Guests must be a minimum of 16 years old, and guests 16 to 18 will need a signed parental permission slip. Challenges are scheduled for the second Saturday of every month.
Why a “Steel Plate Challenge”?
Under Club President Mike Witt, in 2022, members were surveyed on what types of “new” activities would they like to see held at our club. Many of the comments returned expressed the desire for some type of fun/competitive shooting events. Members Stephen Holtz and Hugh Turner, acting on those member inputs, put together a plan for a VSC Steel Plate Challenge, a nationally popular shooting event.
What is the “Steel Plate Challenge”?
Using the Plate Rack on the Pistol Range, shooters will have 30 seconds to knock down all 6 plates, firing 6 rounds only from a designated “Shooters Box”. There will be multiple rotations through the shooters box for each shooter. We will have separate “Classes” of firearms, Rimfire or Centerfire with Iron Sights, and Rimfire or Centerfire with Optic Sights. At our first Steel Plate Challenge, the First Place shooter was using a .38 special revolver with iron sights. The Second Place Shooter was using a .22LR Semiautomatic with iron sights.
Keep your eyes open for future emails to the membership from the event organizers that will provide specific information on the upcoming Steel Plate Challenges. These emails will direct prospective shooters on where/how to RSVP for the event and provide detailed information for the conduct of the event.
